Training

Dr. Thomas earned both an MD and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alabama, completed a general surgery internship, then his Radiation Oncology residency and advanced radiosurgery fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham — specializing in complex brain and nervous system conditions. Before medicine, he earned a Master's in Nuclear Engineering from UC Berkeley.

Practice

Founder and Chief Medical Officer of the Renaissance Institute and Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at The James Comprehensive Cancer Center in Ohio. Dr. Thomas leads pioneering treatments for brain tumors, movement disorders, cardiac arrhythmia, and inflammatory joint and spine disease — and collaborates with Varian Medical Systems on the technology behind safe, efficient radiosurgery.

Firsts & leadership

HyperArc Led the first North American deployment of HyperArc automated radiosurgery on the Edge platform.
Tremor Principal investigator, phase I/II prospective trial of frameless, coneless virtual-cone SRS thalamotomy for essential and Parkinsonian tremor — including first-in-man deliveries.
LDRT A national leader in ultra low-dose radiotherapy for osteoarthritis and spine arthropathy — including low back & neck pain — and Chair of ASTRO's CNS Committee for Benign Radiotherapy.
Cardiac Co-developer of multidisciplinary cardiac radioablation programs for refractory ventricular tachycardia (MAVERICS).
Service Major in the US Army National Guard; 17 years of service including deployment to Iraq as a field surgeon.

Philosophy

Collaboration with patients, families, and referring providers comes first. The goal: innovative, minimally invasive treatment with the highest levels of safety, compassion, and effectiveness — personalized by a background that spans both medicine and engineering.
